{"id":1458,"date":"2007-01-15T17:34:41","date_gmt":"2007-01-15T17:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the19thfloor.net\/?p=1458"},"modified":"2007-01-15T17:34:41","modified_gmt":"2007-01-15T17:34:41","slug":"teachable_momen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the19thfloor.net\/?p=1458","title":{"rendered":"Teachable Moment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post notes that some schools use the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/01\/14\/AR2007011401026.html\">rare opportunity to teach something<\/a> that isn&#8217;t related to the federally-mandated testing that drives so much of the curriculum in public schools. I suppose it&#8217;s inevitable that most people will view holidays like MLK Day as not much more than a day off from school or work, but it&#8217;s somewhat reassuring to know that teachers are taking it upon themselves to give students a historical context for the notation on the calendar. <\/p>\n<p>I find these words of Dr. King, delivered in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.editorandpublisher.com\/eandp\/news\/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003532416\">speech on April 4, 1967<\/a>, to be especially poignant in light of Bush&#8217;s recent proposal to escalate our presence in Iraq:<\/p>\n<p><b><font class=\"text\">If we continue, there will be no doubt in my mind<br \/>\nand in the mind of the world that we have no honorable intentions in<br \/>\nVietnam. If we do not stop our war against the people of Vietnam<br \/>\nimmediately, the world will be left with no other alternative than to<br \/>\nsee this as some horrible, clumsy, and deadly game we have decided to<br \/>\nplay. <br clear=\"none\" \/><br \/>\n<br clear=\"none\" \/>The world now demands a maturity of America that we<br \/>\nmay not be able to achieve. It demands that we admit that we have been<br \/>\nwrong from the beginning of our adventure in Vietnam, that we have been<br \/>\ndetrimental to the life of the Vietnamese people. The situation is one<br \/>\nin which we must be ready to turn sharply from our present ways.
