But brace yourselves, because the forces of progress are going to change our lives in dramatic ways. Imagine&#8230;being able to rent movies&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/machinist.salon.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/09\/apple_rentals\/index.html?source=rss&amp;aim=\/tech\/machinist\/blog\">on your computer<\/a>. Imagine&#8230;being able to purchase digital music&#8230;that will <a href=\"http:\/\/machinist.salon.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/04\/sony_drm\/index.html?source=rss&amp;aim=\/tech\/machinist\/blog\">play on any device<\/a>. Imagine&#8230;being able to download things&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/news.ars\/post\/20080108-comcast-100mbps-connections-coming-this-year.html\">really, really fast<\/a>. Truly, we live in an age of wonders. <\/p>\n<p>I understand that the future will come in a series of shuffling, incremental steps rather than a heady rush. A decade from now, I might marvel at how we ever put up with [insert today&#8217;s cutting-edge but inevitably kludgy and obsolete technology here] for so long.
