After I posted about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the19thfloor.net\/archives\/2008\/11\/faceoff.html\">Noel Martin&#8217;s story<\/a> on Sunday, I learned about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/uk\/health\/article4962436.ece\">Dan James<\/a>. James was a 23-year-old rugby player who became a quadriplegic after a training injury in 2007. Earlier this fall, he traveled to Switzerland with his parents for an assisted suicide. <\/p>\n<p>In related news that was drowned out by the presidential election results, Washington state passed a ballot measure that <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/localnews\/2008360849_webassisted06.html\">legalizes physician-assisted suicide<\/a> for terminally ill individuals. It becomes the second state after Oregon to have such a law on the books. The Swiss law is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/326\/7383\/271\">much more permissive<\/a>; it does not require the involvement of a physician nor does it require that the person have a terminal illness. It&#8217;s difficult to conceive of any jurisdiction here in the U.S. enacting anything similar. I&#8217;ll be curious to see how other European countries&#8211;especially Britain&#8211;strengthen or weaken their own laws on assisted suicide in response. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Assisted suicide is the topic du jour in the British press.
