{"id":3737,"date":"2013-01-23T19:44:30","date_gmt":"2013-01-24T01:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the19thfloor.net\/?p=3737"},"modified":"2013-01-23T19:44:30","modified_gmt":"2013-01-24T01:44:30","slug":"er-visits-for-everyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the19thfloor.net\/?p=3737","title":{"rendered":"ER Visits For Everyone!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like a lot of conservatives, Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi doesn&#8217;t think low-income Americans have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/jeffrey-young\/phil-bryant-health-care-r_b_2534962.html\">any trouble accessing health care<\/a> because, hey, there&#8217;s always the emergency room. And like a lot of conservatives, he doesn&#8217;t seem to grasp that emergency rooms cannot adequately serve the primary care needs of millions of uninsured and underinsured Americans. What&#8217;s even more depressing is that Bryant uses this tired argument to justify his refusal to expand his state&#8217;s Medicaid program to cover more low-income people at no additional cost to the people of Mississippi. Even after an election that seemed to reaffirm popular demand for a strengthened safety net, Bryant prefers to stand behind ideology rather than acting in the best interests of his constituents.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, other governors are rediscovering pragmatism. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, Tea Party favorite and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/compost\/post\/arizona-gov-jan-brewers-finger-pointing-problem\/2012\/01\/26\/gIQAJOyIVQ_blog.html\">unabashed finger-wagger<\/a>, recently announced that her state <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/20\/us\/politics\/medicaid-expansion-is-delicate-maneuver-for-arizona-governor.html\">will proceed with a Medicaid expansion<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like a lot of conservatives, Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi doesn&#8217;t think low-income Americans have any trouble accessing health care because, hey, there&#8217;s always the emergency room.
