It\u2019s still possible that Democrats&#8211;who are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/30\/upshot\/democrats-are-spending-more-on-the-ground-in-key-senate-races.html?smid=tw-share&amp;abt=0002&amp;abg=1\">pouring money into get-out-the-vote efforts<\/a> in states like Iowa and Colorado\u2014could eke out a couple victories, but it\u2019s difficult to ignore the gradual alignment of the various election prediction models <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2014\/9\/29\/6862781\/republicans-senate-takeover-odds\">pointing to a Republican-controlled Senate<\/a>. At this point, neither result would surprise me.<\/p>\n<p>A Republican Senate probably won\u2019t change the political status quo much. Even if the Democrats retain control, it\u2019s unlikely that any major legislation will pass in the next two years. Life could become more difficult for Obama\u2019s judicial nominees and we might have to suffer another government shutdown, but America will muddle and bumble through as it always does.<\/p>\n<p>That last statement isn\u2019t meant to be reassuring. I\u2019ve grown increasingly skeptical of our capacity to muster the political will to make life better for ourselves and our fellow citizens.
