After years of whining to my friends about not being able to find a book club, I decided to take matters into my own hands and started my own on Meetup. I have no idea if it will take off, but it’s attracted enough interest for me to realize that I might actually have to set up a meeting. Any suggestions for our first selection? And please, no cribbing from Oprah’s list of approved titles unless you want me to permanently lose all respect for you.
And if you’re curious about our budding literary circle and want to join in on the fun, e-mail me and I’ll send you the details.

How about one of Obama’s books? Maybe that would be too Oprahish?? Anyway…I just recd 2 of his books from amazon today and can’t wait to read!
I wonder if I lose all your respect if I mention the good old title The Catcher in the Rye…
After many many duds and complaints in my acursed bookclub, i can recommend the few things that have not raised the ire of my fellow readers. In general, classics are good, because even if they suck, most people will revel in the sense of accomplishment accompanying finishing them and would not feel compelled to do so on their own. Specifically, Cloud Atlas (David Mitchell) and Collapse (Jared Diamond) were both big hits with plenty to discuss. Via con dios!
Can we just get together and call it “wine and bitching” club? that seems more accurate. and possibly more fun. But if I must read something, so be it. Kindof worthless with suggestions, though. Sorry. E
