Wired has an interesting little article on the dearth of smart science fiction films. I was really hoping that Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain would fit the bill, but reviews dismissing the film’s mystic overtones leave me reluctant to see it. Perhaps Children of Men will be closer to the mark.
My fairly critical son thought it was great. He didn’t read the reviews.
I don’t think THE FOUNTAIN belongs in the ranks of sci fi, really. But it IS an amazing film. As usual, critics have no idea what they are talking about. Mystic overtones? Hmmm. Only in as much as a husband and wife dealing with her cancer prognosis. It IS sad; bring tissue…
